Regionalization of Green Building Development in China: A Comprehensive Evaluation Model Based on the Catastrophe Progression Method

As an effective measure to reduce energy and material consumption, green building has drawn much attention all over the world. Under the background of ecological city construction, the development speed of green building is extremely high in China. However, it is unclear about the overview of regional green building development. This study puts forward an evaluation model to scientifically measure the regional development of green building. The rough set theory and the catastrophe progression method optimized by entropy method are utilized in the model. A case study is conducted to clarify the application of the evaluation model, and the spatial distribution of regional green building development in 2015 is shown in the end. The result shows that the evaluation model is scientific and applicable. The spatial distribution of green building development in China was uneven. Green building development concentrated on the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area, Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Shanghai Area, Guangdong and Chongqing. Tibet was almost the bottom in every aspect, but it performed the best in economic efficiency. This study not only contributes to the research area of green building development, but also helps to promote green buildings in practice.

Having a healthy built environment becomes increasingly important, especially under the effects of COVID-19. This paper intends to combine sustainable goals based on climate change with passive design principles to achieve a healthy built environment regarding the building performance of residential buildings. The Yuedao Residential Community in the Lingnan area was taken as an example for the research. Based on relevant standards of healthy buildings, the thermal, light, and acoustic environment requirements were determined. The methods of building performance simulation and on-site measurement were used to quantify the research object environments. Then, the outcomes were obtained based on these standards. As observed, the thermal environment’s adaptive thermal comfort level was level III. It was hot indoors, but the light and acoustic environments met the requirements. Building designs based on a built environment optimized by external shading systems aim to solve problems through building performance simulation and qualitative analysis. After optimization, the thermal environment improved. According to the literature review, this research focused on a healthy built environment with a sustainable passive design in terms of building performance. A research workflow was established that could be used for more practical research, with abundant research methods. The problems were solved to varying degrees, and the Lingnan architectural culture was preserved. Moreover, this research filled the gap in interactive research on healthy built environments with sustainable passive design regarding building performance.

This chapter is dedicated to understanding the conceptual differences between healthy and unhealthy built environments (Sect. 2.1) as well as comfortable and uncomfortable conditions (Sect. 2.2) by using standardized professional terminology. In Sect. 2.3, the role of wellbeing in the sustainable building concepts is discussed and further addressed in the context of eco-friendly, green, and low-carbon buildings. The largest part of this chapter is devoted to various health effects related to exposure to health risk factors in the built environment (Sect. 2.4). In Sect. 2.5, health outcomes shown by reviewed epidemiological studies in Europe and worldwide are detailed. The chapter concludes with a determination of priority environments in public and residential buildings as well as vulnerable population groups (Sect. 2.6). 2.1 Healthy Versus Unhealthy Buildings Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity (WHO 1946). The term health was defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1946 and entered into force on 7 April 1948. The definition has not been amended since 1948 (WHO 1946). The definition of health has evolved. In 1948, in a radical departure from previous definitions, WHO proposed a definition that aimed higher: linking health to well-being, in terms of "physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity" (WHO 2005). Moreover, in 1986, WHO (1986) adopted a broad definition of health: "Health is a state of well-being and the capability to function in the face of changing circumstances." Currently, multiple definitions of health exist, from medical, sociological, psychological to physical definitions.
