An Examination of Trends in Geographic Concentration in U.S. Hog Production, 1974–96

Abstract: Geographic concentration in U.S. hog production from 1974-96 is investigated using a measure based on Theil's entropy index. For the U.S. as a whole, geographic concentration is occurring at a slow rate, both for hog farms and hog numbers. However, for particular states, primarily in the new Southern Atlantic production region, concentration is high and increasing at a rapid pace. Concentration was increasing for the 23-year period for 16 out of the 20 states in the analysis. Results indicate that geographic c… Show more

“…A leading source of current public concern associated with livestock industrialization and the spatial concentration of production is the stress large-scale production facilities place on the physical environment (Abdalla et al 1995;Hubbel and Welsh 1998). Manure management and water quality impacts are two prominent environmental concerns (Mallin 2000;Gollehon and Caswell 2000;Jackson 1998) identified as central issues in several studies of local resistance to livestock development (Constance 2002;Burmeister 2002;Delind 1998).…”

“…These indexes are the generally used and accepted in the economy, this is why we consider to present and interpret of this measuring's importance. The special literature mentions many kinds of concentration-analysis methods (Hubbell & Welsh, 1998;El-Osta & Morehart, 2002;Crespi & Marette, 2006;Mitton, 2008), which are used often in agriculture.…”

“…The implicit assumption behind this restriction is that farm specialisation within a county, i.e. how agricultural production differs across farms within a county, is relatively low within homogeneous regions (Peterson, 1995;Hubbell and Welsh, 1998). In the Spanish case, there is evidence of important differences between inland and Mediterranean agriculture (Garcia Alvarez Coque et al, 1999;Mora and San Juan, 2002), but there are no previous studies dealing with crop specialisation at the farm level within narrow geographical units such as counties.…”
