An exhumed Jurassic meander belt from Yorkshire, England

Abstract: An exhumed Jurassic meander belt from Yorkshire, England M. NAMI Summary. Three-dimensional coastal exposures of the Middle Jurassic (Bathonian) Scalby Formation in Yorkshire, England, exhibit a complex, exhumed meander belt. The lateral accretion surfaces (epsilon-cross stratification) of individual meander loops are described. Field and aerial photograph measurements of accretion-surface dimensions have enabled direct determination of channel bankful depths and widths and meander wavelengths. Values for mea… Show more

“…lateral accretion units and current directions at right angles to the dip of lateral accretion units (Allen, 1965a;Allen & Friend, 1968;Cotter, 1971 ;Leeder, 1973;Nami, 1976;Puigdefabregas, 1973). The major erosion surfaces which subdivide the Sudmoor Point Sandstone into six sand bodies probably mark the contacts of individual point bars.…”

“…Allen, 1970a;Cant & Walker, 1976). Little is also known about detailed lateral facies changes, although it is becoming increasingly clear that complex lateral facies relationships occur in modern (Bluck, 1971;Jackson, 1976b;Cant, 1978) and ancient (Nami, 1976;Nijman & Puigdefabregas, 1978)…”

“…Importantly, we also demonstrate how the outcomes obtained from the model can be used to The fluvial point-bar deposits of the Scalby Formation were interpreted originally by Nami (1976) and Leeder and Nami (1979). The complexity of the succession, which is characterised by multiple storeys of point-bar and overbank elements, was revealed in greater detail by Alexander (1986;.…”

“…Her idealized flow model showed a trough between the Peak and Red Cliff faults, draining southward. Within the trough a meander belt developed (Nami, 1976) while over the eastern flank overbank deposits predominate south of Yons Nab (Alexander, 1986).…”
