An Experimental Assessment of the Water Permeability of Concrete with a Superplasticizer and Admixtures

Abstract: This study presents a flow pump technique usually used for evaluating the permeability of soils, which was, for first time, applied to measure the water permeability of concrete. Additionally, a new easy-to-apply method to determine permeability is proposed, based on a modification of Valenta’s formula. In the calculations, the apparent air content of concrete mixes was taken into account. An additional purpose of the conducted research was to determine the influence of a new generation of polycarboxylate supe… Show more

“…Additionally, it is seen that the mix containing type 2 treated RCA and with 5% RHA has a permeability, closer to the control mix containing NA (only a 6% increase in RCA2-30/5, when compared to NA0). Meanwhile all the values obtained were less than 50 mm, which means, according to DIN 1045 [81] standards all the concrete mixes can be considered watertight [80]. Hence in conclusion of the outcomes from previous tests, RCA2-30/5 concrete exhibits superior durability properties due to the densified structure of concrete compared to other RAC mixes.…”

“…From previous studies, it is seen that penetration depths increase for increasing replacements of cement by of RHA in concrete [78][79][80]. The average values for water penetration depths at 90 days, measured to the nearest mm are presented in Fig.…”

“…According to the conclusions of Grygierek's work, scientists' predictions of global warming should be considered in the design process of buildings for thermal isolation thicknesses [58]. As a result, a designed building with a lower primary energy demand will reduce the consumption of natural resources and reduce CO 2 emissions into the atmosphere [59][60][61].…”

“…Finally, according to the assumption of water flow through a system for being continuous and laminar, Darcy’s law was applied. Darcy’s coefficient of permeability was determined using Equation (1) [ 14 ]: K = QL/AΔP where Q is the water flow rate through the specimen (m 3 /s), K is Darcy’s coefficient of permeability (m/s), A is the cross-section of the sample (m 2 ), ΔP is the difference in pressure due to the water height (Pa), and L length of the sample (m). In this manner, the obtained results allowed the following analysis.…”
