An experimental investigation of wave measurements using a dual‐beam interferometer: Gulf Stream as a surface wave guide

Abstract: [1] A dual-beam interferometric synthetic aperture radar measures remotely two radial components of the ocean surface current from a single flight pass. Combining two passes over the same area, all three orthogonal components of the surface velocity can be retrieved. An experiment is conducted near the Gulf Stream (GS) boundary. A sharp change of the surface velocity of about 1 m/s over a 500 m lateral distance is measured. The wind and wave condition is dominated by a 14-s swell system and low wind velocity. … Show more

“…The oscillations observed in the interferograms are due to residual uncorrected attitude effects to which the Wavemill system is very sensitive (as reported also by e.g., Hwang et al . []). The along‐track variability in the interferograms differs between runs and is smaller at near range (by about half) than at far range.…”

“…Several antenna configurations and sampling principles have been employed over the past three decades, ranging from the first demonstration of along-track interferometric (ATI) SAR [26], to the first spaceborne mission TerraSAR-X launched in 2007. The possibility of full current vector retrieval using dual-beam ATI SAR was demonstrated by [27,28], and directional wave spectrum retrieval by [29].…”

“…One reason for the choice of study site was to test the along‐track INSAR system on the large change in current across the inshore Gulf Stream front. Indeed, analysis of the interferometric phase data did show an abrupt change in current across the front of about 1.2 m/s [ Hwang et al , 2006]. Naturally we examined the INSAR phase data for current variations associated with slicks and related small‐scale features in this data set.…”
