An experimental study of charge densities and radiofrequency propagation characteristics in an ion-beam/plasma system

Abstract

Previous studies of an ion-beam klystron showed anomalous results when the drift space was filled by a plasma. This paper describes experiments carried out to study the ion-beam/plasma system in greater detail. Techniques have been developed for the measurement of ion and electron densities, and for the study of radiofrequency propagation characteristics in the system. The results obtained cannot be explained completely by existing theories of the beam/plasma interaction.
