The Internet of Things (IoT) plays a fundamental role in contemporary society, necessitating an in-depth comprehension of its application layer protocols, intertwined technologies, security issues, and effective countermeasures. This survey delivers an exhaustive analysis of these protocols, emphasizing the escalating significance of Explainable Artificial Intelligence in IoT (XAIoT). To elucidate its practical implications, we conducted a case study examining a real-world scenario where XAIoT significantly bolstered IoT security. This case study demonstrated XAIoT's potential to enhance transparency and trustworthiness in IoT systems. Furthermore, the survey critically evaluates existing literature, pinpointing specific opportunities and gaps in the present state of IoT application layer security. For instance, our analysis revealed a pressing need for more robust security protocols and the integration of advanced machine learning techniques for anomaly detection in IoT applications. This survey, designed to provide a comprehensive perspective, seeks to stimulate additional innovation and research in the realm of secure and intelligent IoT applications. In doing so, it contributes to the ongoing dialogue on improving IoT security, offering valuable insights for researchers and practitioners alike.

Recent theoretical studies demonstrate the advantages of using decentralized architectures over traditional centralized architectures for real-time Power Distribution Systems (PDSs) operation. These advantages include the reduction of the amount of data to be transmitted and processed when performing state estimation in PDSs. The main contribution of this paper is to provide lab validation of the advantages and feasibility of decentralized monitoring of PDSs. Therefore, this paper presents an advanced trial emulating realistic conditions and hardware setup. More specifically, the paper proposes: (i) The laboratory development and implementation of an Advanced Measurement Infrastructure (AMI) prototype to enable the simulation of a smart grid. To emulate the information traffic between smart meters and distribution operation centers, communication modules, that enable the use of wireless networks for sending messages in real-time, are used, bridging concepts from both IoT and Edge Computing. (ii) The laboratory development and implementation of a decentralized architecture based on Embedded State Estimator Modules (ESEMs) are carried out. ESEMs manage information from smart meters at lower voltage networks, performing real-time state estimation in PDSs. Simulations performed on a real PDS with 208 buses (considering both medium and low voltage buses) have met the aims of this paper. The results show that by using ESEMs in a decentralized architecture, both the data transit through the communication network, as well as the computational requirements involved in monitoring PDSs in real-time, are reduced considerably without any loss of accuracy.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a reality that is already part of our daily lives. In this context, it is essential to understand the fundamentals of prominent protocols, especially at the application layer level, as well as aspects for implementing solutions for IoT. In this document, we introduce the application layer and its protocolos, namely MQTT, CoAP, MQTT-SN, XMPP and DDS. In addition, MQTT and CoAP protocols are presented in practice, as both have been gaining prominence in the literature and the industry, representing two alternatives for the IoT application layer. Finally, potential applications and trends in areas, namely: security, machine learning, computational paradigms, cyberphysical systems and user interfaces are addressed in order to provide insights to readers and encourage them to the development of IoT applications. ResumoA Internet das Coisas, do inglês, Internet of Things (IoT) é uma realidade que já faz parte do nosso cotidiano. Nesse contexto, é fundamental a compreensão dos fundamentos de protocolos proeminentes, especialmente a nível de camada de aplicação, bem como aspectos para a implementação de soluções na IoT. Neste documento, é apresentada a camada de aplicação e seus protocolos MQTT, CoAP, MQTT-SN, XMPP e DDS. Além disso, os protocolos MQTT e CoAP serão apresentados de maneira prática, visto que ambos vem ganhando destaque tanto na literatura quanto na indústria, representando duas alternativas para a camada de aplicação da IoT. Por fim, as potenciais aplicações e tendências nas áreas de segurança, aprendizado máquina, paradigmas computacionais para IoT, sistemas ciber-físicos e interfaces do usuário serão abordadas.
