An Expert System to Remedy Concrete Imperfections and Their Effects on Rigid Pavements

Abstract: Imperfections of plastic concrete can cause severe deteriorations in rigid pavements surface and structure and reduce its life and serviceability. Diagnosing these imperfections, identifying their causes, and applying effective remedies early can prevent costly repairs in rigid pavements. However, if these imperfections are not remedied in correct time, the deteriorations in rigid pavements shall be reminded as soon as possible to avoid worsening the pavement condition. This domain involves diagnostic nature w… Show more

“…There are many types of cracks such as the tearing of concrete through paver, plastic shrinkage cracking at pavement surface, map cracking (craze cracks), transfer and oblique cracks within the panel, random longitudinal cracks within the panel, corner cracks (break at panel corner), random transverse cracks at or near transverse joints, random longitudinal cracks at or near longitudinal joints, and cracks in front of saw during joint cutting [5]. Variation of crack width in Texas was studied [6].…”

“…Distress of flexible pavements may occur due to several causes [1,2] such as unstable subgrade [3][4][5], insufficient subbase or base thickness [6][7][8], poor mix design of the asphaltic layers, high traffic loading, excessive axel loads, and environmental effects [9,10]. These distresses can reduce the serviceability of the pavements and cause severe damages in the vehicles which lead to large losses in money for the persons and community which results in huge losses to the country's economy [11][12][13][14][15]. In addition, poor pavements condition can cause dangerous traffic accidents that lead to injury or death of road users as well as damages in vehicles and road properties [16][17][18].…”

“…Success in construction can be achieved by applying these efforts intelligently at a reasonable price within a given timeframe [7,11]. However, highway engineers encounter several problems during the construction of rigid pavements [16,17,18]. Among the problems that occur during the construction of rigid pavements, those that occur during concreting are more critical as their occurrence leads to more complex problems.…”
