An In Vitro Approach to Assess Nutrient Utilization of Brewers Dried Grains and Effects of Supplemental β-Glucanase on Swine Feed Ingredients

Abstract: Two experiments were conducted to determine In Vitro Dry Matter Disappearance (IVDMD) of Brewers Dried Grains (BDG) and corn Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS) and to investigate effects of supplemental β-glucanase on the IVDMD in barley, BDG and corn DDGS for pigs. In experiment 1, the IVDMD in corn DDGS and two BDG sources produced from Cameroon and Republic of Korea were determined. A three-step IVDMD procedure was employed to simulate digestion of nutrients in the test ingredients by pigs. The di… Show more

“…Alternatively, in vitro procedures are inexpensive, time-saving, and non-invasive methods compared with in vivo experiments. In vitro assays are widely used to determine nutrient utilization in ingredients [ 7 , 15 ] and extruded diets [ 16 , 17 ] for dogs and feed ingredients [ 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 ] and diets [ 25 , 26 ] for pigs based on the high correlation between in vivo nutrient digestibility and in vitro nutrient disappearance [ 16 , 17 , 25 , 26 , 27 ].…”
