An implementation science primer for psycho-oncology: translating robust evidence into practice

Abstract: Background: It is broadly acknowledged that the next global challenge for psycho-oncology is the implementation of robust evidence-based treatments into routine clinical practice. There is little guidance or texts specific to psycho-oncology to guide researchers and clinicians about implementation science and how to optimally accelerate the translation of evidence into routine practice. This article aims to provide a primer in implementation science for psycho-oncology researchers and clinicians. Methods: We i… Show more

“…Identifying barriers to previous attempts at implementation or reasons underlying failed or slow implementation is a core component of implementation science, as barriers can both contribute to the evidence‐practice gap and be determinants of change 37 . By purposefully designing interventions and strategies to address previous barriers, then, our researchers are aiming to improve care (ie, quality and availability) for parents, adolescents, and siblings, and reduce the practice gaps.…”

“…As external change agents, we did not only want to apply the CFIR as a framework for data-collection at the postimplementation stage as it has typically been used [2]. Like others, we wanted to engage stakeholders in the implementation process to optimize planning and implementation success [22,[27][28][29][30]. Like others, we established and worked with implementation teams [31][32][33][34].…”

“…This study on bereavement risk screening utilized stakeholder feedback, which is a key step to the successful implementation of psychosocial assessments in oncology 22 . Pre‐ and post‐loss family members generally supported the use of bereavement risk screening and provided integral feedback on when and how it should be approached.…”
