An improvement in the moment‐preserving thresholding method

Abstract: Thresholding is frequently used for image segmentation. One of the most popular approach to thresholding is the moment-preserving thresholding method proposed by Tsai in 1985. However, it does not work well when the peaks of a histogram have a great size variation. Hence, in this study we propose a simple and effective improvement in Tsai's method such that suitable thresholds can be found even when the histogram has peaks with a great size variation. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed… Show more

“…As shown in original "Cameraman" In this method of thresholding, the local statistics and SSIM index are calculated within the 3 3  local window, and then the PSSIM is produced by Eq. (13). In order to find out what window size will produce an optimal threshold value, we have tested all the test images with different window size N .…”

“…Then the primary definition of 2-D entropy was also replaced by 2-D Renyi's entropy [4] and 2-D Tsallis entropy [11] by Sahoo and Arora. Tsai's moment-preserving thresholding method was a representative one for another small group thresholding method which considered that the grayscale moments of the histogram kept unchanged before and after thresholding [12], and an improved Tsai's method was also proposed [13].…”

“…Following which, the intensity (contrast) saliency map is constructed through a linear combination of the pyramid levels decomposed earlier. A threshold value is then computed using the improved moment-preserving threshold method proposed by Chen [16]. The ROI is then defined through binarization of the saliency map using the computed threshold.…”
