The idea of smart cities is significant because it seeks to improve a city's infrastructure, traffic, governance, water and waste management, power management, health, safety and security, education, and other systems in order to raise the standard of living for its citizens. This chapter explains the idea of “smart cities” and lists all of the advantages. It explains the many services and applications needed to create a smart city, as well as the part ICT technologies play in putting them into practice. In addition, the difficulties with the current ICT systems are examined in relation to the deployment of smart cities. The chapter explores the anticipated characteristics of 5G technologies and explains why they might be the most effective solution for implementing smart cities successfully.
