“…Previous studies of cell adhesion to metal implants have concentrated on assessing proliferation (Ciapetti et al, 1993;Grill et al, 1997) or adhesion strength (Dmytryk et al, 1990;Fletcher et al, 1979;Mustafa et al, 2001;Richards, 1996) on a fabricated implant. This research has been limited mainly to titanium surfaces, although some studies have investigated other metals (Iijima, 1989;Jansen et al, 1985;Nikolaychik, V et al, 1999).…”

“…It was also shown that secondary cultures were less easily detached from the sites where cells had previously been detached. Fletcher et al (1978) measured the degree of cell adhesion to dental implants by measuring the pressure from a small aperture which detached cells from the centre of a culture. Bell (1978) found that the force required to separate two cells or a cell from a surface was the same order of magnitude as the forces required to pull integral membrane proteins out of the cell membrane.…”

“…At the conclusion of each time span, the masking tape seal from the outside of the hole was removed and the petri dish was placed with the aperture precisely over the debonding apparatus. The air pressure (cm HgO) to debond the various samples from the cell monolayer was measured and recorded on a strip chart recorder (Fletcher et al 1979).…”

“…Over a period of time, however, the epithelial cell attachment is broken rendering the implant useless (Smithloff & Fritz 1976). In an effort to ascertain which materials might avoid this rejection, gingival cell adhesions in vitro to various rigid materials (copper, glass, gold, polystyrene, silver, titanium, vitallium and vitreous carbon) were measured using the blister test (Fletcher et al 1979). In this study, titanium, polystyrene, glass and vitallium provided the best substratum for adhesion.…”
