“…Therefore, we expected that the children would have an increase in the plasma concentration of the stress hormone cortisol, regardless of the diurnal rhythm, such as occurs in healthy young individuals exposed to a psychosocial stressor (Levine 2000;Izawa et al 2013;McEwen 2007). However, differential cortisol responses were noted based on the place of residence.…”

“…All blood samples were only taken in the morning between 11:00 and 12:30, immediately following the interview by the pediatrician and a physical examination. Due to the stressful nature of the forensic examination, an increase in plasma cortisol concentration above the expected diurnal rhythm was to be expected (Izawa et al 2013;McEwen 2007). To ensure conformity, after venesection of every patient, only the principle investigator was involved in all of the final procedures, namely, transfer of the sample to the laboratory for centrifugation (1,000×g for 10 min at 4°C), aliquoting the plasma, and placement of the sample in the freezer (−70°C).…”

“…Salivary levels of IL6, normally secreted under acute stress situations (IZAWA et al, 2013b), were decreased and stable in sheltered compared to owned dogs. In shelters, dogs live in collective stalls and present a hierarchic and social behavior, which allows the maintenance of a balanced emotional state.…”

“…Is there any relationship between IL6 and sociability? IL6 has been pointed out as a real indicator of acute stress (IZAWA et al, 2013b), and as a differentiator between shyness and stress. This stress is normal among dogs, not just in a fight dominance, but also in establishing hierarchy for joining the group.…”
