Summary The Stream X‐Machine (SXM) testing method provides strong and repeatable guarantees of functional correctness, up to a specification. These qualities make the method attractive for software certification, especially in the domain of brokered cloud services, where arbitrage seeks to substitute functionally equivalent services from alternative providers. However, practical obstacles include the difficulty in providing a correct specification, the translation of abstract paths into feasible concrete tests and the large size of generated test suites. We describe a novel SXM verification and testing method, which automatically checks specifications for completeness and determinism, prior to generating complete test suites with full grounding information. Three optimization steps achieve up to a 10‐fold reduction in the size of the test suite, removing infeasible and redundant tests. The method is backed by a set of tools to validate and verify the SXM specification, generate technology‐agnostic test suites and ground these in SOAP, REST or rich‐client service implementations. The method was initially validated using seven specifications, three cloud platforms and five grounding strategies.

Summary In service‐oriented architecture testing, the behaviour of a composite service and its partner services can be represented as an event graph (model). As test cases are derived from such a model, the Chinese postman problem (CPP) algorithm is applied to cover all edges. Although CPP provides an optimal solution, there is a lack of alternative algorithms to obtain not only a faster execution but also a satisfactory solution. This paper introduces the event tree algorithm (ETA) to generate test cases from event sequence models for Web service compositions. Two strategies are also proposed to improve ETA: First, a greedy strategy to build the tree is defined based on the cost of expanding given edges. Second, redundant elements are eliminated (pruned) in the tree. Four versions of ETA are compared with CPP with respect to test suite size, generation time, number of test sequences, and test sequence length.

Testing is the traditional validation method in the software industry. To ensure the delivery of high quality and robust service-oriented applications, testing of web services composition has received much attention. These services have become more and more complex, where they have to cope with strict requirements of business processes and their dynamic evolution, and interactions among different companies. In this context, the analysis and testing of such services demand a large amount of effort. To reduce the effort required for web-services testing, in this paper, we propose a specification-based approach to automatically generate test cases for web services composition that is modeled at different levels of abstraction. This approach specifies a service structure as multi-level models. To generate the test cases, it checks if the first level of the model has a parallel execution or a decision table to be solved by an algorithm that solves Chinese postman problem. Then, it identifies paths for last level of the model and relates the results of all levels with each other. To evaluate our approach, we applied it to four cases study using our developed tool. Compared to exiting approaches, our approach reduces testing cost and execution time, and increases testing reliability.Keywords--Service-oriented Applications, Web Services Composition, Model-based Approach, and Event-driven Model.
