An Information System for Medieval Archaeology Based on Photogrammetry and Archaeological Database: The Shawbak Castle Project

Abstract: Abstract:Since the Renaissance, the remains, myths and visual representations of ancient Rome have influenced not only European culture but also the architecture and urban planning of the big cities of Europe and of the Americas through the process of colonization. The University of Caen Basse-Normandie (France) has a famous visual representation of ancient Rome in the scale model of Paul Bigot, a French architect who lived at the beginning of the 20th century. “…On the contrary, one of the main advantages of the GIS approach is the possibility of working directly with 2D raster data which makes its application easier and faster. Thanks to this it is possible to analyze the heritage at different scales, from city scale for evaluating the natural and anthropogenic hazards (Agapiou et al, 2015;Ortiz et al, 2014) , to building-scale for evaluating the building (Campanaro et al, 2016;Drap et al, 2012;Sánchez-Aparicio et al, 2020) , fusing multidisciplinary and multisource information. This fusion makes the development of complex queries that facilitate the diagnosis, restoration and conservation of the buildings possible.…”

“…These methods and techniques have been considered, according to the archaeological demands about multi-scale documentation, with two main aims: firstly, the support to the documentation of the landscape areas that have been subjected to extended investigations in a larger scale of their territorial extension. Then, for helping the analyses aimed at ancient structures interpretation or focused on specific excavation operations in the large-scale dimension (stratigraphic analysis, geophysics prospection, archaeometry examinations, etc), as is reported as well in Adamopoulos et al 2017, Katsianis et al 2008, Drap et al 2012. These aspects have been tackled in some of the areas recently investigated from the Italian Archaeological Mission, where the Geomatics applied research has been aligned and integrated into a multi-faceted project of joint research addresses: the Multidisciplinary approach to Hierapolis of Phrygia studies that is an Italian relevant research project founded in 2016 (PRIN2015).…”
