A sizeable, and sometimes overwhelming, array of knowledge is available and relevant to Sustainable Water Management (SWM). This knowledge derives not only from the natural, social and engineering sciences but also from practical experiences in water management, which is defined broadly to include all forms of water use as well as the protection of water resources and reduction of risk from water-related hazards. As a publically-funded water research institute, Eawag (the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology) faces the challenges of integrating and synthesizing available knowledge, creating new knowledge through research projects and making knowledge available in an accessible form to support engineering practice, water resources management and related policy-making. This chapter examines these challenges from an organizational perspective, discussing measures taken within Eawag to meet them and identifying remaining gaps and possible ways to address them.

RESUMOA crise hídrica afeta toda a biodiversidade e dela emergem questões éticas da relação humana com a água e seu impacto nas populações vulneráveis. Este artigo analisa do ponto de vista ético como o meio científico tem abordado a crise hídrica. Analisaram-se produções científicas sobre a crise da água de forma qualitativa pela análise de conteúdo. Identificou-se que o pouco interesse que o meio científico tem em discutir os problemas éticos relacionados à crise hídrica faz com que não se tenha um retrato real de quem são os vulneráveis desse processo. Para superar essa realidade propõe-se a bioética ambiental, com sua metodologia baseada no diálogo interdisciplinar, como a ferramenta capaz de considerar e unir os diferentes interesses sejam humanos ou da natureza, bem como para evidenciar as verdadeiras causas da crise hídrica.Palavras-chave: água, ambiente, ética, gestão, vulnerabilidade. The water crisis in scientific publications: environmental bioethics perspectives ABSTRACTThe water crisis affects biodiversity as a whole and creates ethical issues regarding humanity's relationship with water as well as the impact on vulnerable populations.This article analyzes the ethics of the scientific community's approach to addressing the water crisis. Scientific literature relating to the water crisis was analyzed qualitatively based on its content. It was found that the scientific community's reluctance to discuss the ethical problems related to the water crisis results in a failure to clearly identify those who are vulnerable in this process. In order to overcome this failing, we propose the introduction of environmental bioethics, with methodology based on an interdisciplinary dialogue, in order to analyze and integrate the various human or natural interests as well as to highlight the true causes of the water crisis.

Statistics indicate that in 2012, the number of articles on water resource management collected in the Science Citation Index (SCI) and the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) had increased by nearly sevenfold relative to 2000 and by more than a hundredfold relative to the 1990s; the majority of these studies are from the United States, China, and Australia (Ren et al, 2013). In addition to economic and human factors, the unreasonable management of water resources is a major cause of water crises (Loukas, Mylopoulos, & Vasiliades, 2007).…”

2014): An examination of a partial least squares-based dynamic water quota model for urban industries: a case study of the Wuhan City hospital industry, Urban Water Journal,The establishment of water quotas has an important practical significance in promoting urban standards for water utilization. Currently, industrial water quotas are highly arbitrary, inadequately restrictive, and impractical. This paper considers the example of the Wuhan City hospital industry. Common factors of industrial water use and major differences in water utilization structures were considered, and the principles of partial least squares (PLS) analysis were applied to establish an evaluation model for water utilization levels in this industry. Residuals were used to introduce the corresponding adjustment coefficients, and a dynamic model of water quotas in the hospital industry was constructed. Experimental results revealed that for this dynamic model, 80% of the samples examined exhibited errors of j20%j or less; thus, the dynamic approach was superior to traditional approaches for quota determination, where only 40% of samples had errors of j20%j or less.
