An Infrared Spectroscopic Study of Acetone and Mesityl Oxide Adsorption on Acid Catalyst

Abstract: The interactions between the acetone carbonyl and the carbonyl and double bond of mesityl oxide and the Brönsted and Lewis acid sites of acid catalysts have been studied by Fourier Transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The acetone carbonyl interactions with bridging acidic OH and with bridging weakly acidic OH can be distinguished from one another semiquantitatively. This was substantiated by a quasi one-to-one relation between the number of bridging OH in a cluster Si−nAl containing only one Al and the numb… Show more

“…173 The condensation reactions of aldehydes, as well as ketones, are widely used in organic synthesis and are commonly catalyzed by zeolites, Al 2 O 3 , and TiO 2 . [175][176][177] On a detailed mechanistic level, the role of silver species in the HC-SCR of NO x over Ag/Al 2 O 3 was mainly attributed to enhancement of the partial oxidation of reductants to form active intermediates, and their further reaction to produce N 2 . 16,158,172,178 In situ DRIFTS spectra showed that the surface species formed from the partial oxidation of ethanol over Ag/Al 2 O 3 ( Fig.…”

“…Promising candidate routes for producing light olefins include catalytic cracking of naphtha [55][56][57][58] and oxygen-containing chemicals to olefins, such as methanol-to-olefins (MTO) [59,60], ethanol-to-olefins (ETO) [61][62][63][64], and acetone-to-olefins (ATO) [65][66][67][68][69][70][71]. In these olefin syntheses, the initial products consist mainly of lighter olefins such as ethylene, propylene and butylene.…”

“…In an ATO reaction, isobutylene is produced primarily from aldol condensation products of acetone (ATO reaction) over solid acid catalysts [65][66][67][68][69][70][71] in accordance with two reaction pathways in which a dimer and a trimer of acetone are decomposed to produce isobutylene [26,39], as shown in Fig. 14.…”

“…This indicates that a condensation reaction occurs synchronously during the partial oxidation of C 2 H 5 OH over Ag/Al 2 O 3 , which leads to chain growth of desorption products. The condensation reactions of aldehydes, as well as of ketones, are widely used in organic synthesis and are commonly catalyzed by zeolites, Al 2 O 3 , and TiO 2 [54][55][56][57][58]. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were also used to confirm the structure of adsorbed enolic species on Ag/Al 2 O 3 using the Gaussian 98 suite of programs.…”
