An Infrared Thermoelastic Stress Analysis Investigation for Detecting Fiber Waviness in Composite Structures

Abstract: A full-field thermoelastic stress analysis infrared (TSA-IR) method is used to investigate the possibility of inspecting for out of plane fiber waviness in composite structures. Two different waviness profiles are generated and compared to control specimen having no anomalies. Tension and compression loading schemes are investigated and the TSA-IR emissions are compared to cross-sectional investigations. A subset of the specimens is also notched to investigate the thermal emissions from holes when compared to … Show more

“…According to [19,27,28], out-of-plane fiber waviness leads to the reduction of composite strength owing to the redistribution of load in the waviness area. At the same time, the waviness area is also a stress concentration area [17,29,30], where the initial defects are easy to occur. Therefore, the influence of magnitude factor and failure mode are analyzed through the experimental results.…”

“…Given the morphology of wrinkles observed, the static strength and stiffness in the areas around the wrinkling zone are expected to be more than 50% lower than pristine or unwrinkled portions away from this region and the fatigue life reduced by more than 10 1–36 . This type of defects are by sure pre‐existing.…”

“…The results should be distinguished from the stress concentration from main composite structures or thermal expansion from the composite surfaces. 10 Advanced X-ray imaging techniques, such as computed tomography, can indicate waviness defects and ply orientation clearly. 11,12 However, the equipment is expensive and the imaging resolution is confined by the sample size.…”
