Techno humus systems correspond to man-made topsoils under prominent man influence. They may be purposely\ud conceived for supporting agricultural activities or dumping of waste products, sometimes abandoned to\ud an unknown evolution. Both categories needed a more scientific frame. This is the reason we classified them as\ud morpho-functional humus systems. Improving agricultural soils with organic waste products is an ancestral\ud practice. We present four examples of techno humus systems purposely created for supporting plant growth.\ud Considering a simple home-made composting pile, we give a few basic notions about the biological functioning\ud of these artificial humus systems. Humipedon functioning and structuration are similar to those observed in\ud natural humus systems. Using even animal manure, we illustrate how to manage larger compost piles of waste\ud for application in farming areas. Composting waste that contains animal proteins needs a more careful measurement\ud of the temperature of the pile and a longer period of elevated temperature in the core of the pile.\ud Mulching of pruning residues is presented in a large urban context. The use of mulch must take into account\ud quality and composition of woody material. The lack of nutrients in some residues has to be compensated by a\ud moderate use of appropriate mineral fertilizers. Municipal solid waste, anaerobic digestion residues (grape remains)\ud and spent mushroom compost, eventually mixed with mineral fertilizers, have been tested in horticulture.\ud Benefits and drawbacks are listed for each experiment, with the evolution of carbon storage along 8\ud years of horticultural practice. Finally, we present an example of “dump” humus system. Mine tailing wastes\ud represent a huge problem in many countries. Pointing on their microbial activity, we show that they must be\ud seen as manageable living humipedons, not as piles of inert rocky material

Modern biorefineries target the production of chemicals and fuels from lignocellulosic biomass feedstocks such as energy crops and biodegradeable wastes. Biofuels produced from such processes are considered "second-generation-biofuels" and are considered to be more sustainable than first-generation-biofuels from food and oil crops. This paper considers the contribution that biorefineries can make in the Republic of Ireland to the mandated 10% biofuel quotient for 2020. This is done by considering eight different technologies and the practical quantities of waste suitable for them. It is concluded that between 3.5 and 5.7% of the 2008 demand for biofuels can be met from the utilisation of wastes and residues in near-term biorefining technologies and that up to 5% of the 2020 petrol and diesel demand can be met via processing a similar quantity of waste in an advanced enzymatic hydrolysis technology. The remaining biofuel requirements can be met by processing energy crops in either this or an advanced thermochemical facility. Between 1.8 and 13.7% of the agricultural area of Ireland is required for the production of these crops, depending on the particular feedstock. The production of a high-yielding Miscanthus crop that is harvested directly after senescence will place the minimum requirement on Irish land.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of partially replacing fish meal with FMBH on the growth, digestive enzyme activity, and antioxidant capacity of allogynogenetic crucian carp. Fermented mushroom bran hydrolysate (FMBH) was prepared by enzymatic hydrolysis after the solid fermentation of mushroom bran (MB) inoculated with Ganodermalucidum and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Nine hundred fish were allotted to six groups and were fed diets in which the fish meal was replaced with 0% (FMBH-0), 16% (FMBH-16), 32% (FMBH-32), 48% (FMBH-48), 64% (FMBH-64), and 80% (FMBH-80) FMBH. After 71 days, the weight gain ratio and the protein efficiency ratio of FMBH-64 and FMBH-80 were significantly higher than those of the FMBH-0 group (P<0.05). No significant differences were noted for the specific growth ratio, feed conversion ratio, or survival rate among all groups (P>0.05). The protease activity in the midgut was not significantly different among all groups (P>0.05). However, compared with FMBH-0, the protease activity in the fore gut of FMBH-32, FMBH-48, FMBH-64, and FMBH-80 was significantly elevated (P<0.05), the amylase activity in the fore gut and midgut of FMBH-32, FMBH-48, FMBH-64, and FMBH-80 was significantly elevated (P<0.05), and the lipase activity in the fore gut and midgut of FMBH-48, FMBH-64, and FMBH-80 was significantly elevated (P<0.05). Compared with FMBH-0, FMBH-80 demonstrated a significant increase in the serum total antioxidant capacity and anti-superoxide anion activity (P<0.05), but a significant decrease in the maleic dialdehyde content (P<0.05). FMBH-48 and FMBH-64 also significantly increased the anti-superoxide anion activity (P<0.05). Therefore, replacing a 64%-80% proportion of dietary fish meal with FMBH could improve the growth, digestive enzyme activity, and antioxidant capacity of allogynogenetic crucian carp.
