An inpatient neurobehavioural rehabilitation programme for persons with traumatic brain injury: overview of and outcome data for the Minnesota Neurorehabilitation Hospital

Abstract: Persons with TBI and severe neurobehavioural disorders demonstrated significant improvement on the outcome measures especially when considering patients pre-admission histories. Also, the majority of patients maintained these gains at 3-year post-discharge follow-up. Further study is certainly needed and welcomed determining specific, cost-effective treatments and services that can benefit persons with TBI and associated neurobehavioural disorders.

“…The degree to which people were able to assume social roles and constructive occupation after rehabilitation is perhaps the most significant outcome of this study. Typically in such a severely injured cohort the vast majority remain unable to secure competitive employment [63]. However, this study shows that the overall level of constructive occupation after rehabilitation is not as poor an outcome as it may first appear, once one considers the limited employment opportunities available to many of the cohort pre-morbidly.…”

“…The results suggested that psychiatric patients with a history of TBI appeared to improve less than patients without such a history. Furthermore, in a preliminary clinical study, we found that patients admitted to a state psychiatric facility who also had a history of TBI tended to have longer stays, histories of multiple psychiatric admissions, and histories of multiple community placement failures (Murrey, Starzinski, & LeBlanc, 2002). These preliminary studies suggest that psychiatric patients with a history of TBI did not readily benefit from traditional psychiatric treatment and presented with more severe behavioral and executive control dysfunction.…”

“…The activities assist to improve cognition and physical skills and as a beneficial behaviour management tool (Wells, 2005). In Minnesota, discipline-specific therapies for brain injured clients are provided within the natural and non-confrontive horticultural settings (Murrey & Starzinski, 2004). The horticultural therapy programme is described with goals for behaviour, self-oriented activity, physical, occupational rehabilitation, and vocation (Murrey, Wedel, & Dirks, 2001).…”
