An Insight into the Role of Glycerol in Chitosan Films

Abstract: This work was focused on assessing the influence of the glycerol in chitosan matrices, analyzing the changes produced in the molecular mobility, mechanical, thermal, barrier and structural properties. The addition of glycerol in the matrix decreased the stress values, increasing the elasticity and water vapor permeability of the films, with a marked decrease in glass transition temperature; Detailed analyses of Fourier Transform IR Spectroscopy spectra supported the observed changes, especially in the spectral… Show more

“…The water vapor permeability (WVP) of the collagen fiber–apatite films was measured using a method reported in the literature . The composite films were cut into pieces 4 cm in diameter, and the film was used to seal a testing cup containing anhydrous calcium chloride.…”

“…The samples were weighed (3.0 mg) in aluminum pans and hermetically sealed. The tests were carried out from 25 °C to 220 °C, at a heating rate of 10 °C min −1 , under N 2 atmosphere (50 mL min −1 ) . The crystallinity index was obtained from X‐ray diffraction analysis (XRD) in a diffractometer (Brunker D‐8, Germany).…”
