An Integrated Approach to Map the Impact of Climate Change on the Distributions of Crataegus azarolus and Crataegus monogyna in Kurdistan Region, Iraq

Abstract: The hawthorns Crataegus azarolus L. and Crataegus monogyna Jacq are two ecologically and medicinally important endemic tree species that occur only in forests of oak in the mountain ranges of the Kurdistan region of Iraq (KRI). These species have been degrading across the mountain ranges at an alarming pace due to climate-related factors (e.g., wildfire events and drought) and anthropogenic drivers. Nevertheless, there is a gap in understanding their distributions today and in the future under a changing clima… Show more

“…Consequently, conservation plans are required to conserve these restricted endemic taxa and plant diversity in the Egyptian Mediterranean territory. Many Mediterranean species are restricted to a single or few localities in sandy areas, isolated mountain ranges, or islands of unusual soils or rocky grounds; thus, this region is characterized by a high degree of endemism compared to other regions (Zahran 2010;Radha and Khwarahm 2022). According to UNEP (2022), the Mediterranean is one of the most vulnerable regions in the world to the impacts of global warming.…”

“…AUC presents the overall accuracy of the model 68 . The value range for AUC is from 0 to 1 71 . AUC scores above 0.5 indicate the model performs better than random and above 0.75 are considered acceptable for predictive accuracy 72 , with > 0.8 considered good and 0.9 considered excellent 73 .…”

“…In addition, it helps evaluate the model's performance by iteratively leaving out one occurrence point at a time and then comparing the model's predictions with the omitted occurrence point. Additionally, the logistic output format was used to create a continuous map, employing the minimum training presence logistic threshold [37]. Based on this threshold, the habitat suitability and unsuitability for the vector ticks were categorized.…”
