An integrated approach to the optimization of in-plant wastewater interception with mass and property constraints

Abstract: This article addresses the problem of in-plant pollution prevention for processes with multiple streams, containing pollutants and environmentally undesirable properties through mass exchange networks (MEN). In-plant interception is used to adjust the concentrations and properties of the wastewater streams. A pinch-based disjunctiveoptimization approach is adopted. The determination of the pinch point (being the most constrained thermodynamic and practical operating condition) is critical for determination of … Show more

“…Artificial fish swarm algorithm (AFSA) is an effective method to solve industrial optimization problems, e.g., wastewater management, clustered oversubscription planning and nuclear fuel cycle [32][33][34]. Thus, we propose to adopt artificial fish swarm algorithm to solve the established models.…”

“…In most literatures the values of  are generally specified as 0.0001 [5] [9]. In this way, the calculating process is simplified, but it is an imprecise approximation.…”

“…They presented an automated synthesis procedure iteratively for a range of  values in an attempt to minimize the TAC of the network and the optimal  [2]. Papalexandri and his colleagues pointed out that the main limitation of the above procedure introduced by El-Halwagi and Manousiouthakis was its sequential approach [9]. In the design process, the operating and capital costs were not considered simultaneously.…”

“…20 Wagialla 21 presented an integrated approach for optimizing the stream matching of a MEN for a metal packing process. Recently, Chaiwattanapong et al 22 incorporated controllability analysis for synthesizing MENs, whereas Wagialla et al 23 incorporated property constraints in the synthesis of MENs. A recent systematic survey of MEN synthesis can be found in the books by Foo, 24 El-Halwagi, 25 Foo et al, 26 Majozi, 20 El-Halwagi, 27 and Smith.…”
