During the last decades, standards on building construction have risen sharply to integrate new, ambitious demands regarding energy efficiency, as well as thermal and optical comfort in the design procedure. Building simulation software assists in the accurate calculation of a hypothetical or existing building's performance on several aspects; but they are, in their vast majority, assessment-oriented, rather than focused on dynamically supporting the decision-making procedure. During the last two decades, a clear shift of design professionals and academia towards addressing performance issues from the conceptual stages of a building's design is observed. In this review, the methodology of performance-driven design optimization using computational/parametric design and optimization is presented, and the core literature available on the topic is reviewed in order to identify the current status, different approaches, obstacles, and areas of future research on the subject. The review findings confirm that there is enormous potential for the design of better-performing buildings using this technique, but there are still many obstacles to overcome and areas for future research.

ABSTRACT. The retrofitting works in old buildings require appropriate knowledge of the vernacular techniques. Previous researches have identified retrofitting works as more intrusive and using more unnecessary demolition materials than real needs. This study constitutes a new framework that focuses on the project management success of old building retrofitting in historical centres by developing a methodological system for this purpose. It uses a construction sector system approach, reviews legal requirements, framework specifications, recommendation practices and sustainable measures adapted to old building projects. It presents 50 parameters adapted to these works' specificities that could be used by construction market stakeholders. The research uses a case study methodology divided in two parts. The first one involves the review of building retrofitting projects in historical centres, complemented by a questionnaire in the second part. The results of the projects review have shown little concern with the underlying sustainability aspects of retrofitting works in all project designs analysed. However, the questionnaire results have revealed a high interest and applicability of all parameters omitted in the project designs data. The study describes a useful management system in a toolkit format which might contribute to reduce uncertainty in the management of retrofitting projects in historical centres.

Abstract:The oceans are a crucial source of natural resources for human development, as productive terrestrial resources increasingly reach their limits of economic and ecological exploitation. With increasing human impact on oceans, it is vital to maintain a sustainable human-ocean relationship. We present an indicator system and information entropy model to assess the evolution of human-ocean systems (HOSs) according to the dissipative structure theory. Sustainable development ability (SDA) scores for HOSs are calculated based on the combination-weighting model. Finally, the Richards model is used to depict the HOSs' evolution states and periods in different coastal regions of China. The assessment indicates that total entropy is undergoing a process of negentropy; and that order degrees of HOSs are gradually improving. The results also suggest that the sustainable development levels of HOSs are continuously improving. The different coastal regions showed notable disparities of SDA and evolutionary processes, due to a differing resource base, environmental carrying capacity, and socio-economic development. Different limiting factors should determine regional policies for enhancing the SDA process; the key to sustainable development of HOS is achieving a balance between the exploitation of ocean resources for socio-economic development and conserving ecosystem services that are critical to wellbeing and livelihoods.
