An integrated knowledge representation model for the computer-aided conceptual design of mechanisms

Abstract: An integrated knowledge representation model, namely the topology structure behaviour function (TSBF) model, is presented for the computer-aided conceptual design of mechanisms (MCACD) in this paper. The model covers both qualitative and quantitative knowledge representations of generic mechanisms. A class hierarchy consists of the abstract mechanism, the embryo mechanism, and the concrete mechanism is then proposed for object-oriented modelling. Based on the TSBF model, several reasoning techniques are integr… Show more

“…In [12], an ontology for representing design objects is described along with the interactions between these objects, which is used to investigate a range of meanings of the terms 'structure', 'behaviour', and especially 'function' in engineering practice. Based on the SBF concept, an integrated TSBF model [13] has been proposed for the computer-aided conceptual design of mechanisms. The SBF model has also been viewed as a programming language and applied to the development of an interactive model construction tool named SBFAuthor [14].…”

“…The issue of computer-aided conceptual design has been explored in many domains, such as in dynamic systems [1], mechatronics [2], mechanical designs [3,4], and structural design [5,6]. For such systems, one advantage is that concepts can be systematically or exhaustively generated, therefore some concepts that the designers would have overlooked can be reminded from the solutions generated by the systems.…”

“…A number of scientists have made a significant contribution to the creation and subsequent development of scientific foundations for the development of equipment and technologies for the implementation of waste-free methods for separating bar sections [4][5][6][7][8]. Mechanical presses abroad are produced by such countries as: USA, Germany, Japan, England, etc., companies: National, Eumuco, Haserclever, Erie, etc.…”
