An Integrative Therapy Framework: Research and Practice.

Abstract: Research in human development and studies on therapy process and outcome respectively address similar questions: How does change come about and what influences it? Very similar answers emerge from these two research domains. Both have much to offer to the contemporary endeavors for therapy integration. The comparisons of the findings combined with clinical experience provide a basis for an integrative framework for therapeutic practice that can be applied to any therapy model. The components of the framework a… Show more

“…One such understudied practice is an integrative psychotherapy focusing on narrative in schizophrenia. By integrative , we refer to a psychotherapy that assumes that the complexity of human dilemmas is beyond the purview of any single theory (O'Brien, 2004) and that “the intentional creation of a narrative meaning” in psychotherapy calls for interventions interlaced into an internally consistent theoretical network (Feixas & Botella, 2004, p. 196). By integrative psychotherapy , we also refer to a psychotherapy that seeks “psychological integration within the client, by bringing together previously fragmented and isolated aspects of the self” (Moursund & Erskine, 2004, p. 9).…”

“…Tenet 1 advises choosing models that offer unique and necessary underlying principles, and reflects how it is crucial to be purposeful in integrating theories. This fits with O'Brien's (2004) call to www.FamilyProcess.org 546 / FAMILY PROCESS focus integration at the personal level of the therapist, and it helps therapists with the crucial step of taking a critical, reflective stance about what they are doing and why in their treatments (Boswell et al, 2010;O'Brien, 2004). Tenets 1 and 2 guide therapists in choosing a limited set of principles and techniques that add value and are more varied than those from any single model.…”

“…In this article we focus on psychotherapy from an integrative perspective. By integrative , we refer to a psychotherapy that begins with the premise that human dilemmas, perhaps especially those involved in schizophrenia, are complex and beyond the purview of any single theory (O'Brien, 2004). As Feixas and Botella (2004) noted, “the intentional creation of a narrative meaning” in psychotherapy calls for more than one model (p. 196).…”
