An Interactive Model of Pain and Myocardial Ischemia

Abstract: The biopsychosocial model has been used to describe the intertwined factors that may act as mechanisms in cardiovascular disease, as well as those found in pain conditions. This model may also prove useful in understanding a diagnosis that overlaps these two areas, angina. This article reviews the literature related to biological, psychological, and social mechanisms of painful ischemic episodes and discusses the interactions of those variables. We propose an integrated model that incorporates the biopsychosoc… Show more

“…Culture, social attitudes, and relationships help shape self-concept and the ways people participate and experience illness and disability. Abundant evidence also suggests the importance of psychosocial factors in the expression of illness [8082]. Intersections among the 3 spheres—the body, mind, and society—represent the biopsychosocial model, which is widely accepted as the most heuristic approach to understanding illness and disability today [49].…”

“…Chest pain characteristics such as intensity, onset, relieving and aggravating factors may differ from patient to patient [3]. Many researchers across the globe have contributed their knowledge to this phenomenon and have tried to explain the mechanism behind cardiac pain perception [4]. Despite available literature, there is a limited understanding of exact pain pathways and precipitating factors to pain, such as the intensity of pain with respect to the region of myocardium being affected.…”

“…A number of biological factors (e.g., comorbid conditions, age, gender, racial differences) impact the chronic pain experience of adults with SCD (Hofkamp, Henrickson, & Wegener, 2007). While some biological factors are common to all types of chronic pain, some are unique to persons with SCD.…”
