“…3 Violence and psychological manipulation are common, and victims are at increased risk of injury, sexual assault, infectious diseases, substance misuse, untreated chronic medical conditions, malnutrition, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depression and other mental health disorders, homicide, and suicide. [4][5][6][7][8][9] Given the large number of children and youth involved and the numerous adverse effects on the victim's physical and mental health, medical providers are in a unique position to help potential victims. 10 The United Nations' "Protocol to Prevent, Suppress, and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children," defines severe trafficking in persons as the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring, or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power, or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation.…”
