An International Comparison of Individual Tree Detection and Extraction Using Airborne Laser Scanning

Abstract: Abstract:The objective of the "Tree Extraction" project organized by EuroSDR (European Spatial data Research) and ISPRS (International Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing) was to evaluate the quality, accuracy, and feasibility of automatic tree extraction methods, mainly based on laser scanner data. In the final report of the project, Kaartinen and Hyyppä (2008) reported a high variation in the quality of the published methods under boreal forest conditions and with varying laser point densities. This… Show more

“…There have been two main approaches for extracting tree parameters: model-based tree extraction and area-based tree extraction. For years, many studies (Naesset, 1997;Persson et al, 2002;Brandtberg et al, 2003;Hyyppä et al, 2004;Peuhkurinen et al, 2007;Yu et al, 2011;Vastaranta et al, 2012;Kaartinen et al, 2012) have been conducted to extract and accurately analyse 3D tree structures. Although many algorithms for tree modelling proved to extract tree objects effectively, most methods have been designed for forest landscapes and have no pre-processing of separating trees and buildings, which is a necessary task in tree extraction in urban areas.…”
