An interval scale for development of children aged 0–2 years

Abstract: SUMMARYMeasurement of development is often less precise than that of height and weight. Developmental scores are typically based on passing one or more developmental markers, but do not have interval scale so calculating di erences between scores can be nonsensical. Age-speciÿc standardized scores are sometimes used, but fail to have a common metric that allows comparison of developmental scores across age. The goal of this study is to develop a quantitative developmental score (D-score) with improved measurem… Show more

“…All infants were examined by a medical doctor at 15 or 16 months of age using the "Van Wiechen developmental test" [11]. This is a Dutch screening test for neurodevelopment used in the general practice to monitor the development of children from birth up to four years of age [12] in a few categories: fine motor activity, adaptive and personal social behavior, communication and gross motor activity (Annex 1).…”

“…A D-score enables a comparison of scores between persons and an evaluation of the developmental velocity within a child. 27 Data about infection-related contacts of the children within their first year of life were collected through medical records of GPs. Nearly all people living in the Netherlands are registered with a GP.…”
