“…528 Variation of the polymer chain length also allows tuning of the emission color. 529,530 Lanthanide salts other than Eu(CF 3 SO 3 ) 3 that have been incorporated in diureasils are Eu(ClO 4 ) 3 , 531 EuCl 3 , 532 Nd(CF 3 SO 3 ) 3 , 533,534 and Tb(NO 3 ) 3 . 535 2,2′-Bipyridine acts as a sensitizer for Tb 3+ luminescence in silica-PEO hybrid materials (Figure 20).…”

“…silica network. These hybrid materials form transparent, elastomeric monoliths, and are able to dissolve luminescent guest molecules in high concentration (Bekiari et al, 1999;Carlos et al, 1999Carlos et al, , 2000aCarlos et al, , 2000bCarlos et al, , 2002Sá Ferreira et al, 2001 2001) covalently bound β-diketones (Hacac, Hbtfa, Hdbm and Hhfa) to a functionalized silica that was obtained by a sol-gel reaction between TEOS and 3chloropropyltrimethoxysilane. The β-diketones in their sodium form reacted with the functionalized silica, so that the β-diketones became linked to the silica matrix via the α-carbon.…”

“…Selfabsorption related with the lanthanide ions, is also observed in analogous erbium-based nanohybrids [29] and other hybrids containing Nd 3 + . [27,[30][31][32] The presence of these self-absorptions indicates that the visible light emitted by the phenyl rings is absorbed by the Nd 3 + ions and then probably converted into NIR emission, indicating the presence of a radiative energy transfer channel of visible-to-NIR energy conversion involving the phenyl-rings' excited states and the Nd 3 + levels. For the yttrium-based nanohybrids the decay curve is well reproduced by a single exponential function revealing a lifetime value of 0.049 AE 0.006 ms which is remarkably long for this type of hybrid which can undergo nonradiative deactivations.…”
