An Introduction to Solar Cells

Abstract: Most likely, solar cells will play a significant role in this country's strategy to address the two interrelated issues of global warming and dependence on imported oil. The purpose of this paper is to present an explanation of how solar cells work at an introductory high school, college, or university physics course level. The treatment presented here will be qualitative and somewhat simplified, in order to reach the desired audience; references are provided for a more detailed and mathematically sophisticate… Show more

“…Solar PV energy is a direct conversion of sunlight into electric energy using panels with large arrays of PV cells. These are semiconductor-based devices designed to explore the absorption of incident photons to generate electrical charge carriers (electrons in the conduction band and holes in the valence band of the semiconductor base material), producing an output voltage which can power an external electrical circuit (Mosca and Tipler 2008, Feldman 2010, Francia 2021. Current commercially available solar PV cells are generally made of silicon and have moderately low PV efficiencies of the order of 24% or lower (Chen et al 2021).…”

“…In order to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and hydrocarbon emissions into the atmosphere which leading to the global warming, renewable cells are very familiar to the public and the applications of PV panels can be seen in our everyday lives, such as calculators, weather stations, outdoor solar street lamps or panels on rooftops [3]. The ubiquity of solar cells has made them objects of interest in science and engineering education [4][5][6][7]. Nowadays, many high school or undergraduate physics classrooms and laboratories have produced experimental or practical works on solar cells [3,[8][9][10][11][12][13][14].…”
