An inventory of coastal freshwater fishes from Amapá highlighting the occurrence of eight new records for Brazil

Abstract: The Amazon Basin occupies a vast portion of northern South America and contains some of the highest species richness in the world. The northern Brazilian state of Amapá is delimited by the Amazonas River to the south, the Oyapock River to the northern boundary with French Guyana, and the Atlantic northeastern coast to Amazon estuary. Despite several expeditions to the Amazon in recent decades, little is known about the freshwater ichthyofauna from Amapá, with records limited to local inventories and species de… Show more

“…Fishes were caught with sieve and trawl net in several heterogenic habitats, such as small streams, river channels and lagoons covering two ecoregions of northern Brazil ( sensu Abell et al., ): the Guianas (lower Oyapock river) and Amazonas Estuary and Coastal Drainages (see Melo et al., ). Field expedition was realized during dry season of late November/early December 2015.…”

“…Despite of easily obtained, LWR and LLR parameters of most fish species stay unavailable (Froese, ), including those from remote regions. The Amazon ichthyofauna from the coastal rivers of the state of Amapá, northern Brazil, was recently extensively inventoried and 120 freshwater fish species were reported (Melo, Benine, Britzke, Gama, & Oliveira, ). In order to further investigate their ecology, we provide LWR and LLR for 16 fish species from coastal rivers of Amapá.…”

“…Consequently, these studies may result in new discoveries (e.g., undescribed species) and can be implemented as the basis for conservation actions (e.g., Castro et al 2004, Serra et al 2007, Raiol et al 2012, Ohara & Loeb 2016, Silva-Oliveira et al 2016, Melo et al 2016, Ferreira et al 2017.…”
