“…At Chicheley North , the maximum mean N 20 flux observed was 0.109 mg NzO-N m-2 hr-I (0.026 kg N s. E. MACHEFERT ET AL. Brown et al (2001) for direct emission from soil (0.25-2.25). Total fluxes from both riparian ecosystems studied are also characteristic of emissions from N-enriched ecosystems (Machefert et al, 2002).…”

“…About 70% of the total globally emitted N 20 is derived from soils (Bouwman , 1990) and agriculture as a whole (i.e., animal excreta, denitrification of leached nitrate (N0 3 ), etc.) contributes about 81% of the anthropogenic N 20 emissions (Brown et al, 2001).…”

“…Furthermore, the complexity of these interactions makes prediction of N 2 O emissions and simple relationships between fluxes and factors difficult to obtain. In order to derive more reliable estimates of N 2 O emission, interactive Brown et al (2001) show, the IPCC default values are gross approximations. Those wanting more precise estimates must resort to site-specific measurements or dynamic models such as DNDC (Li et al, 1992(Li et al, , 1996 or SUNDIAL [1996][1997][1998] mineral N '-' Data not determined or not published *: typic rendzic leptosol, gleyic luvisol, eutric leptosol Temperatures are annual means except for the following studies: Henault et al, 1998 (3 months), Martikainen et al, 1994 (9 months), Regina et al, 1996 (9 months) …”

“…Emissions from fossil diesel combustion in are calculated using IPCC methodology, module 1 Energy, and emissions from nitrogen fertilizer (N 2 O) using module 4 Agriculture. We are aware that some authors [21] show that in some conditions the default value used to calculate emissions are not representative, and they can underestimate or overestimate relative emissions values. We are sure that for specific processes at local scale, an appropriate approach could be found; however, IPCC methodology is widely used and the only one scientifically accepted, even if it needs improvement.…”
