“…The World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that some 20,000 people die annually from pesticide exposure (WHO, 1990) but those chemicals also protect yields, profits and public health. Some insecticides have been shown to devastate natural enemy populations in some systems (e.g., Boza Barducci, 1972;Matlock and de la Cruz, 2002), but in others, particularly with some of the more novel insecticides, there appear to be minimal impacts (Naranjo et al, 2004). Insecticides have had profound effects on predatory bird populations in some instances (e.g., Sibly et al, 2000) but others have been used in seemingly sensitive ecosystems for decades without evidence of impact upon non-target organisms (Resh et al, 2004;Holmes, 1998).…”

“…In sites with low agrochemical use, high parasitism may have resulted from high parasitoid abundance and diversity. Abundance and richness of parasitoids is negatively affected by nematocide and insecticide application (Matlock and de la Cruz 2002), and use of the insecticide endosulfan (i.e., brand name Thiodan) is common in the study region (Damon 2000). Almost all of the sites with zero agrochemical use were forests, and thus, some other feature of the forests, such as increases in resources, not measured in this study may have contributed to the observed pattern.…”

“…In some farming systems it has documented the negative effect of broad-spectrum insecticides on populations of natural enemies (Matlock and De la Cruz, 2002;Romero, 2004) and the ecological impact of farming systems of high performance is enhanced by the intensive use of insecticides, in these systems, the lack of information by decision makers, promotes actions that harm non-target species and eliminate organisms that serve as food for others in the food chain (Altieri et al, 1989;Holland y Luff, 2000;Romero, 2004).…”
