“…The findings of this investigation confirm and complement those of earlier studies (Littlemore et al, 2013;MacArthur, 2010) and contribute additional evidence suggesting that special attention needs to be paid to both metaphor comprehension and metaphor use in L2, especially at the levels studied. However, some limitations have to be pointed out.…”

“…Nowadays with the application of metaphor to second language teaching and learning, more and more language researchers are becoming interested in the value of metaphor in pedagogical context (Kövecses, 2001;Dirven, 2001;Piquer Píritz, 2008;Tyler, 2008;MacArthur, 2010), given that metaphor is ubiquitous both in thought and language (Deignan, 2005;MacArthur, 2010;Littlemore et al, 2013). A number of studies showed the benefits of the use of metaphor in language learning, for instance, metaphor helps to develop reading skills (Boers, 2000;Holme, 2004;Carter & MacCarthy, 2014), and also facilitates vocabulary learning (MacLennan, 1994;Taylor, 2003).…”

“…Assessing aspects of content is a rapidly growing research topic, including evaluation of arguments, of the writer's use of information from source materials, of the coherence of the essay, among others (Ghosh et al, 2016;Persing and Ng, 2015;Stab and Gurevych, 2014;Song et al, 2014;Somasundaran et al, 2014;Gurevich and Deane, 2007). Use of metaphor is another aspect of language use that goes beyond grammar and mechanics; recent research suggests that use of metaphor differs with proficiency (Beigman Klebanov et al, 2013), including in non-native writing (Littlemore et al, 2013). On top of serving as a new dataset for metaphor detection experiments, our corpus supports investigation of the relationship between metaphor use and English proficiency.…”

“…In spite of the great expansion that research on learner corpora has seen in the last decade, after Granger's pioneering work and the compilation of the International Corpus of Learner English (ICLE) (Granger et al 2002), followed by the compilation of many other learner corpora, little research has been published on the actual use of metaphor by learners (Littlemore & Low, 2006;Chapetón et al, 2012;Golden, 2012;Nacey, 2013;Littlemore et al, 2014). As shown earlier, there are several studies dealing with the study of metaphor in both public discourse and legal discourse.…”
