An investigation into producing Botryococcus braunii in a tubular photobioreactor

Abstract: BACKGROUND Botryococcus braunii is a eukaryotic photosynthetic microorganism, requiring light, water, and inorganic nutrients for growth. It can convert CO2 into biomass and bioactive compounds with applications in food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. Parameters such as inorganic carbon and nitrogen sources, vitamins, and salts are important factors regulating algal growth and biomass composition. RESULTS It was possible to observe the influence of salinity on growth and biomass composition of B. brau… Show more

“…Finally, the lipid fraction was recovered in petroleum ether. After the conversion of fatty acids into their corresponding methyl esters (Hartman and Lago, 1973), the analysis of fatty acid methyl esters was carried out in a gas chromatograph, model 7890 (Agillent Technologies, USA), equipped with a split/splitless injector and FID detector (flame ionization detector) in accordance with Pérez-Mora et al (2016). The identification of fatty acids in the samples was carried out by comparing the retention times with those obtained in standards present in "37 Component FAME Mix" (Supelco).…”

“…Numerous studies on the growth and hydrocarbon production of B. braunii have been conducted. The effects of various nutritional and environmental factors such as nitrate, phosphate, micronutrients, carbon source, temperature, salinity, and pH on the growth and metabolism of B. braunii have been investigated, as well as the optimization of photobioreactor types . When cultivated in photoautotrophic conditions, light is one of the most important factors as it is the essential energy source for the synthesis of algal biomass and metabolites.…”

-HOTHALY et al, 2016;BANERJEE et al, 2002;DAYANANDA et al, 2007aDAYANANDA et al, , 2007bFURUHASHI et al, 2016b;KOLLER et al, 2012;METZGER, LARGEAU, 2005;XIN et al, 2010).…”
