“…The “WHO Surgical Safety Checklist” is used globally to ensure patient safety during surgery [1] and has demonstrated potential to be effective at reducing surgical complication and mortality rates [24]. The WHO checklist improves ‘patient safety and inter-discipline communication’ and prevents ‘avoidable complications by emphasising current safety procedures [5]. Despite widespread adoption, surgical “never events” and other OR related serious incidents still occur, which could be due to problems regarding compliance to the checklist [6].…”

“…2 A study by Vries et al has shown that the use of a similar checklist leads to better compliance with regard to the timing of antibiotic prophylaxis administration leading to better control of SSIs. 4,12 In our study, the prophylactic antibiotics were given within 60 minutes of surgery in all cases where checklist were used. In those cases without the checklist, antibiotics were given as per hospital protocol just before the surgery.…”

“…3 Compliance remains a major problem in implementation of checklist, despite its effectiveness in increasing patient safety and also causes gaps in its daily use till date. 4 Research has suggested that barriers to implementation of the SSC include staff hierarchy, time constraints, inconsistent delivery with omission of items. 5 Viewing the checklist as a tick box exercise and nobody assuming responsibility for sign-out checks lead to its omission.…”

“…[15] Important factors seem to be cultural and procedural issues in specific healthcare settings. [16,17] Also, a study reported substantial deficiencies in medical school curricula regarding the teaching of surgical checklists and timeout procedures. [18] In contrast to the general trend, some authors have raised the concern that surgical timeout procedures may not reduce mortality after all.…”
