“…The relative absence of efforts to evaluate the unique variance in offspring problems associated with parental PTSD relative to other conditions is unfortunate as it precludes confident conclusions about the specific relation between offspring problems and parental PTSD per se. Indeed, nationally-representative estimates suggest persons with PTSD frequently suffer from major depression (Kessler, Sonnega, Bromet, Hughes, & Nelson, 1995), panic disorder (PD; Feldner et al, 2009;Kessler et al, 1995), and use substances including alcohol, cocaine, nicotine, and methamphetamines at elevated rates (Brady, Dansky, Sonne, & Saladin, 1998;Dansky, Byrne, & Brady, 1999;Feldner, Babson, & Zvolensky, 2007;Kessler et al, 1995;Mills, Teesson, Ross, & Peters, 2006;Smith, Blumenthal, Badour, & Feldner, 2010;Stewart, 1996). Importantly, these comorbid conditions are each linked with offspring problems (e.g., Biederman et al, 2001;Hammen, 2009;Marmorstein, Iacono, & McGue, 2009;Unnewehr, Schneider, Florin, & Margraf, 1998).…”
