An investigation of the Lewis acid mediated 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition between N-benzyl-C-(2-pyridyl)nitrone and allylic alcohol. Direct entry to isoxazolidinyl C-nucleosidesElectronic supplementary information (ESI) available: optimized geometries (PDB format). See http://www.rsc.org/suppdata/ob/b3/b304112c/

Abstract: The cycloaddition reaction of N-benzyl C-(2-pyridyl) nitrone with allylic alcohol has been carried out to obtain the corresponding 2-benzyl-3-(2-pyridyl)-5-hydroxymethylisoxazolidine. The influence of Lewis acids in the reaction has been studied and a complete 3,5-regioselectivity and cis diastereoselectivity was observed when the reaction was carried out with 1.0 equiv of AgOTf, [Ag(OClO3)(PPh2Me)] or Zn(OTf)2. Insight into the mechanism of the reaction has been obtained by isolating and characterizing (X-ray… Show more

“…We have shown, in previous reports, that stoichiometric reactions of the N-benzyl-C(2-pyridyl)nitrone with different dipolarophiles in the presence of zinc and silver compounds afforded an increase of both the reaction rate and the selectivity, favouring the formation of one of the possible isomers. The existence of zinc and silver-nitrone complexes during the reaction, which behave as intermediates in the cycloaddition process, was confirmed by different structural techniques [3,4].…”

“…Thus, the 1 H NMR spectrum displays a downfield displacement of the nitrone resonances (mainly for d (HC@N) and d (NCH 2 Ph) resonances) as occurred in silver and zinc complexes described previously by us [3,4]. The 19 F NMR spectrum exhibits a characteristic pattern for a square-planar gold(III) complex [6].…”
