“…The SHS technique has been applied to produce a number of the MAX carbides, like Ti 3 SiC 2 [27], Ti 3 AlC 2 [28], Ti 2 AlC [29], Ta 2 AlC [30], Nb 2 AlC [31], and Ti 2 SnC [32]. However, the formation of Cr 2 AlC from its constituent elements by the SHS process is unfeasible, due mostly to insufficient exothermicity of the reactions among Cr, Al, and carbon [33].…”

“…When compared with the above-mentioned methods, combustion synthesis in the mode of self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) takes advantage of the self-sustaining merit from highly exothermic reactions and hence has the benefits of low energy requirement, short reaction time, and simple facilities [14][15][16]. Moreover, the SHS technique has been effectively applied to produce a number of the MAX carbides, like Ti 3 SiC 2 [17,18], Ti 3 AlC 2 [19,20], Ti 2 AlC [21,22], Ta 2 AlC [23], and Nb 2 AlC [24]. As the first attempt, this study aims at the synthesis of Ti 2 SnC by solid state combustion in the mode of SHS with the green samples compressed from both the Ti-Sn-C and Ti-Sn-C-TiC powder mixtures.…”

“…Extensive studies were performed on many MAX compounds, such as Ti 3 SiC 2 , Ti 3 AlC 2 , Ti 2 AlC, Cr 2 AlC, and Ti 2 AlN [4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. Fabrication of the MAX phases has been conducted through a variety of processing routes; for example, hot pressing (HP) [2,4,5], hot isostatic pressing (HIP) [6,7], in situ hot pressing/solid-liquid reaction synthesis [10][11][12][13][14][15], pulse discharge sintering (PDS) [16][17][18][19], and self-propagating hightemperature synthesis (SHS) [20][21][22][23][24][25].…”

“…The SHS technique has been effectively utilized to produce a number of the MAX carbides, like Ti 3 SiC 2 [20], Ti 3 AlC 2 [21], Ti 2 AlC [22], Ta 2 AlC [23], Nb 2 AlC [24], and Ti 2 SnC [25]. Recently, Yeh et al [40] first prepared Ti 2 AlC 0.5 N 0.5 from TiC-and TiN-diluted Ti-Al-C powder compacts by combustion synthesis in either solid-gas or solid state mode.…”
