This review refers to the current status and future trends in the production of synthesis gas, i.e. CO and H
2
, via both partial oxidation and CO
2
reforming of methane. Particular attention is given to mechanistic aspects of syngas production. CO
2
, CH
4
and oxygen activation, carbon deposition as well as catalyst deactivation are dealt with. Also, the catalytic performance of different types of reactors such as fixed bed, fluidized bed, membrane type, solid fuel cells, and monolith type as well as new concepts in the reactor design are a part of this review, which ends with the kinetics of the partial oxidation of methane and its reforming by CO
2
and H
2
O.
