Purpose Due to its impact on business performance total quality management (TQM) has gained a lot of importance by businessmen, managers, practitioners, and research scholars over the last 20 years. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to critically assess the literature on TQM and find out the areas where future research is required. Design/methodology/approach To achieve this purpose the articles published in the last 20 years were studied in a systematic way and a snapshot of the same was prepared in the tabular format with points such as year and journal of publication, application and country, statistical method used, and findings of the study such as practices and impact of TQM. After identifying the practices and impact of TQM a quality tool “Pareto Analysis” was applied on them for development of the model. Findings The findings provide the practices of TQM and its impact on the performance of a business. The gaps from the literature have been identified and areas for future research have been suggested. On the basis of the findings a generalized framework of TQM has been suggested which can be applicable irrespective of the sector. Practical implications The research will help academicians and future researchers to have a clear understanding of TQM in different rosters. Originality/value Ample literature is available on TQM but in the best knowledge of authors no study has taken place to integrate the reviews and findings of 102 research papers of the last two decades.

PurposeIn this era of Industry 4.0, characterized by disruptive technologies, there is a need to identify and understand the role of the quality function in the excellence journey. Quality 4.0 refers to the digitalization of quality work in the context of Industry 4.0. As Quality 4.0 is a new concept, empirical research on the subject is extremely scant. Therefore, this study aims to identify and understand the criticality of the dimensions of Quality 4.0. Design/methodology/approachThe present research identifies 12 axes (dimensions) of Quality 4.0 based on literature review and inputs from experts. The identified axes have been prioritized using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) technique.FindingsThe study concludes that the 12 dimensions contribute to outcome indicators such as organizational performance, agility and sustainability. It further adds that though technology is vital for Quality 4.0, elements of traditional quality such as leadership, quality culture, customer focus, quality systems, compliance, competence, analytical thinking, data-driven decision making, etc. are mandatory for the transformation journey. In today's context except for a few matured organizations, others are even struggling to implement the traditional aspects of quality.Research limitations/implicationsCues to further research are provided which would help in the better understanding of Quality 4.0 and its role in the Industry 4.0 scenario.Practical implicationsThis research would help the practitioners understand the determinants of Quality 4.0 system and their effects on organizational performance, agility and sustainability.Originality/valueThe present research work strives to throw light on the criticality of the dimensions of Quality 4.0, thereby contributing to theory building, especially given the paucity of literature in Quality 4.0.

Providing a Framework for Performance Evaluation of Organizations in Successfully Implementing TQM, Based on Knowledge Management Approach and Organizational Agility

Nowadays, any organization, in order to be aware of the desirability and quality of its activities, especially in dynamic environments, urgently needs an evaluation system to assess its system’s performance and efficiency. In this study, the performance of production and service organizations has been evaluated according to the effect of knowledge management success factors and organizational agility on the success factors of total quality management (TQM (total quality management)). Considering that the two areas of knowledge management and organizational agility are among those influential on TQM and each has been examined separately in the previous studies in relation to it, none of the previous studies has focused on all these three areas together. Therefore, in the present study, in addition to evaluating the performance of organizations based on the success factors of TQM, we seek to identify the influential factors and success factors of each of the three areas of knowledge management, organizational agility, and TQM; then, the impact of knowledge management and organizational agility on the success factors of TQM is evaluated. To express the above-given relationship, group interpretive structural modelling (ISM (interpretive structural modelling)) techniques have been used to rank the components of each domain; also, fuzzy quality function deployment (FQFD (fuzzy quality function deployment)) technique has been applied to find the weight and relationship of the three mentioned domains by examining the independent and interface variables of the previous step. The weights resulting from two-stage house of quality have been used as the weights for the design of the two-stage data envelope analysis (DEA) model by the weight control method. Finally, the above-given factors in knowledge-based companies located in Khorramabad Science and Technology Park have been studied and the results have been expressed.
