An Ionic Liquid‐Surface Functionalized Polystyrene Spheres Hybrid Electrolyte for Rechargeable Zinc/Conductive Polymer Batteries

Abstract: A rechargeable zinc/poly(p‐phenylene) (PPP) battery has been fabricated using Zn metal as the anode and electrochemically synthesized PPP as the cathode, with ionic liquid (IL)‐surface functionalized polystyrene (PS) spheres as the electrolyte. The PS spheres were treated with oxygen‐plasma to introduce polar groups (e. g., carbonyl and carbonate) that interact with the components of the IL, enabling the fast movement of the Zn2+ ions upon polarization. The wettability, ionic conductivity and electrochemical p… Show more

“…The quasi-solid-state gel electrolytes (GPEs) are composed of liquid electrolytes and polymer matrices, which have the advantages of liquid and polymer electrolytes, such as high ionic conductivity, strong mechanical properties, and flexibility. Many reports have been available in pieces of literature on flexible [154] Copyright 2018, Wiley-VCH. b) Ionic conductivity of IL-based polymer electrolytes.…”

“…IL‐surface functionalized PS spheres facilitated the rapid diffusion of the Zn 2+ ions upon polarization and allowed the formation of porous and dendrite‐free zinc deposits during charge/discharge processes. [ 154 ] Moreover, metal–organic frame with unique structure can also effectively fix the anions of ILs and effectively increase the migration number of zinc ions, which also is an effective strategy to improve the performance of ILs electrolytes. The strategy was widely used in LIBs but rarely used for ZIBs, especially in combination with ILs electrolytes.…”

“…Lately, Liu et al. fabricated a rechargeable Zn–PPP battery composed of Zn anode, PPP cathode, and IL surface‐functionalized PS sphere electrolyte, as sketched in Figure a . CV tests of the Zn anode and the PPP cathode were performed at a scan rate of 10 mV s −1 and the resulting patterns are exhibited in Figure b.…”
