An IoT-based cargo monitoring system for enhancing operational effectiveness under a cold chain environment

Abstract: Differing from managing a general supply chain, handling environmentally sensitive products (ESPs) requires the use of specific refrigeration systems to control the designated range of storage conditions, such as temperature, humidity, and lighting level in a cold chain environment. In general, third-party logistics (3PL) companies are authorized to handle ESPs, who therefore need to have a good cargo monitoring system in the cold chain environment, without which the functional quality is difficult to control … Show more

“…A comprehensive review concerning IoT is presented in [42], and its general application is described in [43]. A general application of IoT for monitoring perishable goods is given for cold chain management [44,45] and specific applications in the area of healthcare are shown in [46,47] and in [48,49] for agriculture. Due to the rapidly increasing number of applications of IoT, the McKinsey’s Global Institute predicts that IoT will have an economic impact of between 4 and 11 × 10 12 USD by 2025 [50].…”

“…IoT enables the gathering of real-time information [70] about the freight along with its transportation chains like the sea, and air. The use of IoT technology in FMS increases operational efficiency, maintenance, reduces electric consumption, and adapt to the environmental changes [71]. The FMS is divided into categories like Commercial Vehicle Operation (CVO) and Advanced Fleet Management System (AFMS).…”
