An isolable, crystalline complex of square-planar silicon(IV)

Abstract: Our Earth's crust is covered with compounds of silicon(IV). In each, tetracoordinated silicon(IV) arranges its four substituents in a tetrahedral fashion, while other environments are unknown. This work describes the isolation and properties of a molecular complex with square-planar silicon(IV). The flattened structural motif provokes a range of features that primes the second most abundant element for new applications in catalysis and materials science.

“…An intriguing main group s-bond complex, [IMe 4 -(Cb)(m-H)(HSiEt 3 )][B(C 6 F 5 ) 4 ], (IMe 4 = 1,3,4,5-tetramethylimidazol-2-ylidene,C b = 1,2-dicarba-closo-dodecaborane) has been described in which as ilane (HSiEt 3 )i sp roposed to engage with the empty p-orbital of ac ationic borenium center in aB ( h 2 -Si-H) s-interaction (Figure 5). [65] Other complexes have been reported where Si À H•••B [66] or C À H•••Si bonds [67] are invoked. It will be interesting to see if s-CAM is extended to reactions involving only main group elements.…”

“…For example, Greb recently reported the synthesis and reactivity of a square pyramidal (SP) hydrosilicate, which was surprisingly inert in contrast to its trigonal bipyramidal (TBP) congeners, 2 abstraction of Cl − from the SP chlorosilicate gave a square planar silane. 3 The same group later showed the synthesis and reactivity of a planar aluminate that remains Lewis acidic despite the negative charge. 4 Berionni reported a borane with a pyramidal boron-center having an enhanced Lewis acidity.…”

“…36 Very recently, the first quadrilateral crystalline ptSi complex was successfully synthesized and characterized experimentally. 37 Given the fact that the ptSi species have remained scarce, it is desirable to design further examples and introduce them to the ptSi family. In the current work, we choose to computationally explore a simple pentaatomic SiB 2 Be 2 cluster system, as well as its heavier XB 2 Be 2 (X = Ge, Sn, Pb) congeners.…”
