An iterative image reconstruction algorithm combined with forward and backward diffusion filtering for in-line X-ray phase-contrast computed tomography

Abstract: In-line X-ray phase-contrast computed tomography (IL-PCCT) can reveal fine inner structures for low-Z materials (e.g. biological soft tissues), and shows high potential to become clinically applicable. Typically, IL-PCCT utilizes filtered back-projection (FBP) as the standard reconstruction algorithm. However, the FBP algorithm requires a large amount of projection data, and subsequently a large radiation dose is needed to reconstruct a high-quality image, which hampers its clinical application in IL-PCCT. In … Show more

“…In this study, a combination of Poisson noise and Gaussian noise [39], which was used to simulate the statistical noise in the projections, was added into the phase-shift sets for analyzing the robustness and reliability of the proposed algorithm in the presence of statistical noise. The parameters of the noise model were set as follows: the photon number of Poisson noise I 0 was set to 1.0×10 5 , while the mean value m G and variance σ 2 G of the Gaussian noise were set to 0 and 5, respectively.…”

“…For simulation, the parameter λ was first selected from 0.05 to 9 with step size 0.05, then we selected it from 0.26 to 0.43 with step size 0.01, in the end we selected λ=0.32 (the corresponding CT image has highest MSSIM and lowest RMSE values) as the optimal λ value for simulation. The calculation of MSSIM and RMSE can be seen in [3,4].…”

“…In this regard, in this second part of the review, the main focus is to give an overview of the use of synchrotron X-ray applications in human dental research (for animal species, numerous studies have been carried out on a variety of species and fossils [ 256 , 257 , 258 , 259 , 260 , 261 , 262 , 263 , 264 , 265 , 266 , 267 , 268 , 269 , 270 , 271 , 272 , 273 , 274 , 275 , 276 , 277 , 278 , 279 ], as well as studies on biofilms [ 280 , 281 , 282 , 283 ]). This review was performed by searching several platforms, including ScienceDirect, Web of Science, and SciFinder.…”
