An LWD Tool Suite for Formation Evaluation in HP/HT Environments

Abstract: The tool suite that is introduced in this paper provides Logging-While-Drilling (LWD) formation evaluation with tools rated up to 350°F (175°C) and 25,000 psi (172.4 MPa). These ratings qualify as High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) environments for LWD services, where the standard ratings are much lower. The HPHT LWD suite consists of measurement-while-drilling (MWD), annular pressure, resistivity and nuclear porosity services. The MWD service provides surveys, optional gamma ray measureme… Show more

“…Com o aprimoramento dessa ferramenta para telemetria, foi possível obter uma maior taxa de transmissão de dados e de comunicação com a sonda de perfuraçãoem comparação com a taxa de transmissão de dados do pulso positivo e negativosendo assim bastante empregada para a obtenção de dados em tempo real e permitindo maior suporte ao processo de perfuração de poços de petróleo, tornando o processo bastante eficiente (RENNIE, 2007).…”

“…In oil exploration, the underground environment is complex. In order to verify the lithology, the corresponding tools, equipment, and drilling fluid properties must be cooperated to sample the rocks so as to determine the properties of the rocks in the formation and understand the mineral conditions of the formation [2,3,4,5]. Nevertheless, the debris generated during the drilling process of the conventional PDC bits is in the powder form and too small for formation identification; thus, different types of bits are required to meet the demand of full drilling and coring [6,7,8].…”

“…The tool was successfully used to log portions of the S8-15 corehole in The Geysers. Although hightemperature gamma ray tools exist in the oil and gas industry 89 , there is (to the authors' knowledge) no other existing high-temperature spectral-gamma logging tool. As the tool is lowered into the well, the on-board memory also creates a temperature log to specify conditions at the sample point.…”
