An observational study of the association between androgenetic alopecia and size of the prostate

Abstract: Introduction:Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is characterized by miniaturization of the hair follicle, leading to vellus transformation of the terminal hair follicle. It is caused by interactions between androgens, several genes, and environmental factors with hair follicles. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is highly prevalent among elderly men but infrequent in those younger than 40 years. Because both entities share a common pathogenesis and AGA manifests before the onset of BPH, there could be an association… Show more

“…Prostatic volume and diameters were assessed in males by an expert urologist by revising radiological pre-HSCT imaging when available. Prostatic hyperplasia was radiologically considered of grade 0 when up to 20 cc, then it was graded as follows: grade 1 20-40 cm^3, grade 2 40-60 cm^3, grade 3 60-80 cm^3, grade 4 for more than 80 cm^3 in volume 14 .…”

“…[2] Występowanie AGA jest czynnikiem zwiększonego ryzyka chorób sercowo-naczyniowych, zaburzeń metabolizmu glukozy, cukrzycy typu 2 i powiększenia prostaty. [3,4,5,6,7] AGA jest dolegliwością uwarunkowaną czynnikami genetycznymi i hormonalnymi, związaną z nadmiernym pobudzeniem receptora androgenowego (AR) w komórkach mieszka włosowego. [8] Endogenne androgeny obejmują testosteron i dihydrotestosteron.…”
